The globalisation under the frame work of WTO has brought about
plethora of changes in the arena of international trade. In order to retain the
competitiveness of the Indian industry and sustain in the global competition
and also to formulate strategies at selected product/ sector level, there is a
need to enhance the understanding of the trade negotiators and the policy
makers as well as the stakeholders of the industry. So, in order to facilitate
and support this capacity building, The Government of India, The United Nations
Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Department For International
Development (DFID/UK) are jointly implementing a five-year programme,
“Strategies and Preparedness for Trade and Globalisation in India”. The
Component-I of the project is assisting the negotiators and policy makers in
enhancing the understanding of the development and pro-poor dimension of key
trade issues relating to the Doha work programme. On the other hand, the
Component-II of the programme intends to strengthen the human and institutional
capacities of the stakeholders. The activities under both these components are
interlinked since Component-I activities such as research and analysis of
negotiating issues are disseminated to the stakeholders and the responses are
fed back to the negotiators, under the Component-II activity.
